Jeff set for his 15th Leeds Half Marathon

When Jeff Harwood took part in the 2001 Leeds Half Marathon he was confident it would be both his first and last event.

Since then the 53-year-old glass company worker has missed the race just twice and on Sunday May 14th will clock up Leeds Half Marathon number 15.

Jeff, who lives in Oakwood, Leeds, said: “Back in 2000 I mentioned to a colleague who ran that I would like to have a go at the Leeds Half Marathon. He said that when I was able to do two miles, he would do me a training plan and would do the run with me.

“I was not really into running at that stage and I thought it would be my first and last run ever.”

He was wrong. Jeff kept up the training and a year later completed the London Marathon.

Jeff took part in 11 events last year and this year is aiming to tackle seven half marathons.

He said: “I really enjoy the Leeds Half Marathon. I like the fact that it’s local so there’s no travelling involved and it’s got better over the years.

“There’s a great atmosphere and you get great support from the crowds, especially as you get back into the city centre and are near the finish.”

Jeff, who has a half marathon PB of 1:39, is not the only fan of the Leeds Half Marathon in his family.

His wife, Davina, has completed the event seven times. Her grandmother died shortly before last year’s run but Davina still ran and was determined to finish.

She said: “I had my name on my running top and another runner said ‘come on Davina’ and that spurred me on. The support along the route has increased during the time I have been doing the half marathon.”

Davina is taking part again with Jeff in 2017, to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary.
