Your May 2017 Yorkshire Marathon newsletter18/05/2017
Congratulations! You’re a marathon winner
Race day is still over four months away but you’re already winner. You’re one of the lucky runners to secure a place in the fifth running of the Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon, which once again is a sell-out.
Every year since its 2013 launch all general entry places in this massively popular event have been snapped up, with runners from across the country and abroad attracted by the fantastic atmosphere, an opportunity to run through historic York and a scenic course showcasing the beauty of the White Rose county.
If you have friends who would like to enter, the event’s partner charities have a limited number of places left. This year’s partner charities are the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Macmillan Cancer Support, Martin House Children’s Hospice, Candlelighters, St Leonard’s Hospice, Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, St Gemma’s Hospice, The Children’s Hospital Charity, Alzheimer’s Society and Stroke Association.

So, with your place in the bag all you have to do is run it. Good luck with your training.
The Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon may be sold out but there is still one way people can get involved on the big day – as a volunteer.
Volunteers are vital to the success of the event. Along with carrying out key jobs, their encouragement for the runners, courtesy towards spectators and positive attitude set the tone for the day.
If you have friends coming along to support you why not encourage them to support the event as well? Roles available include marshalling, staffing the baggage tents, handing out medals and goody bags and helping at water stations. For more details click here.
Robbie’s back to conquer the wall
Robbie McEwan has entered the 2017 Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon to “right a wrong” from last year’s event.
The 2016 event was Robbie’s marathon debut and his pre-race plan fell to pieces when he hit the dreaded wall at 20 miles. This year Robbie, from Leeds, is determined to enjoy a more successful run.
He said: “I am looking for anything under five hours and hoping for 4:30. I’m feeling fine and looking forward to the challenge.
“I admired Jane Tomlinson and her achievement and I enjoy running for the Jane Tomlinson Appeal. I have made some great friends who have encouraged me.”
And the best piece of running advice Robbie has received?
“Fight the voice in your head telling you to stop because you can beat it.”
Hitting the wall is that sudden tiredness and loss of energy caused by the depletion of the body’s glycogen stores. When this runs out the body switches to using fat for fuel.
Common tips for avoiding the wall include keep topping up the carbs with gels and isotonic drinks, don’t go out too fast and don’t neglect your weekly long run during training.
The Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon has established a reputation as one of the UK’s premier autumn marathons that regularly attracts an elite field.
